영어에 관하여 (1) - 초등학교, 중학교 시절 2025. 12. 08 

나는 영어, 국어 보다는 수학, 과학이 좋았다.
특히 수학의 답이 딱딱 떨어지는 부분이 좋았다.

내가 초등학교를 다닐 때는 - 나는 국민학교에 입학해서 초등학교를 졸업했는데 - 영어를 학교에서는 배우지 않았다. 
초등학교 4학년 즈음, 학원에서 조금 배우기 시작했는데, 당연히 학교에서 시험을 치르지 않으니까 어려움은 없었다.

중학교에서 영어를 배우기 시작하면서 시험을 치고, 그 당시 국어, 영어, 수학, 과학, 사회를 배우는 종합학원에서 배우기 시작하였는데, 중1, 중2에도 큰 어려움은 없었던 것으로 기억한다.
이미 초등학교 때 조금 배웠고, 지금 생각하니 아주 기초적인 내용이기 때문이었던 것 같다.

중3 때부터 영어 때문에 위기가 시작되었던 것 같다.
암기해야할 어휘량이 늘어난 것 같고, 문장 구조가 복잡해진 것 같았다.
늘어난 단어와 복잡한 문장 구조를 어려운 책으로 공부를 하니 너무 재미가 없었다. 
중학교 학원 친구 중에 한 명은 영어를 아주 잘 하였는데 - 지금 생각하니 조금 더 친하게 지냈어야 했다 - 왜 그렇게 영어를 잘 했는지 그 당시에는 궁금해하지 않았다.
아쉬운 부분이다.
그리고 중3 때 학원에서 영어 단어 암기를 엄청 시켰는데, 너무 재미가 없어서 좋은 점수를 받았던 적은 거의 없었던 것으로 기억한다.
그렇게 고생을 하다가, 고등학교에 입학하게 된다.


최근에는 영어는 암기하고, 익혀야 한다. 라는 생각으로 계속 공부한다.
마치 자전거 타듯이, 축구하듯이, 피아노와 같은 악기를 다루듯이. 다만 익혀야 하는 기술이 아주아주 어려울 뿐이다.
오늘도 실생활 영어 문장을 조금 공부하였다. 하지만 잘 입에 붙지 않는다.
언젠가는 입에 붙을까....

About English (1) – Elementary & Middle School

I always preferred math and science over Korean or English.
Especially math—I loved how answers landed cleanly and definitively.

When I was in elementary school — I entered when it was still called “국민학교” and graduated after the name changed — we didn’t learn English at school.
Around fourth grade, I started taking a few classes at a private academy, but since there were no tests at school, it never felt difficult.

I really began studying English in middle school, when we had regular exams.
I enrolled in a 학원 (private academy) that taught all the core subjects—Korean, English, math, science, and social studies.
Even then, in my first and second year, I don’t remember struggling much.
I had already learned a bit in elementary school, and now that I think back, the content was quite basic.

Things took a turn in my third year of middle school.
That’s when English started to feel overwhelming.
The amount of vocabulary we had to memorize increased, and the sentence structures became more complex.
Trying to learn all of that through dense, difficult textbooks made everything even less enjoyable.

One of my academy friends was incredibly good at English—
looking back, I really should’ve stayed closer to him.
But at the time, I never wondered why he was so good or how he studied.
A missed opportunity, for sure.

In third year, the academy also pushed heavy vocabulary memorization.
I found it boring and exhausting, and as a result, I rarely scored well.
After a year of that struggle, I eventually entered high school.

 

These days, I’ve once again come to believe that English must be memorized and practiced,
the same way you learn to ride a bike, play soccer, or master a musical instrument.
The difference, of course, is that this particular “skill” is incredibly difficult.

I studied some everyday English sentences again today.
But they still don’t come out of my mouth naturally.
Maybe someday they will… I hope.
