About English (0) – Epilogue 2025. 11. 17

About English (0) – Epilogue

November 17, 2025

This might end up becoming a long series.

Forgive me if the tone jumps between casual and formal here and there.

I’ve never been good at English—not since high school, which was already more than twenty-five years ago.

I hated memorizing vocabulary, and honestly, I wasn’t good at it anyway.

Little did I know back then that this struggle, this frustration with English, would follow me for more than two decades.

Up until middle school, English wasn’t something I worried about.

But in my first year of high school, the number of words I had to memorize suddenly exploded, and that’s when the trouble started.

By senior year, English—especially the English section of the university entrance exam—became my biggest obstacle.

Most of my classmates with similar overall grades seemed to pull off great English scores, while mine always lagged behind.

Around that time, I came across a book called Never Study English (“영절하”).

I followed it for a bit but couldn’t make it work for me.

After that, I kind of let English drift to the background.

But it kept coming back.

In college, I struggled again—reading English textbooks, following English lecture materials, writing research papers.

And now, somehow, I’m in the U.S. on a research sabbatical, once again battling English on a daily basis.

I tell my students how important English is,

yet I still haven’t overcome it myself.

Sometimes I wonder if I ever will.

Maybe it’s time to look back—middle school, high school, college, public service, residency—and retrace how this whole journey unfolded.
